Comparing Fractions
This lesson is on comparing fractions (especially fractions with unlike denominators). Students will need to determine whether a fraction is greater than, less than, or equal to another fraction. At the bottom of the page are a few word problems demonstrating application of the skill.

1. Mrs. Murphy made cookies for her children. Out of these cookies, Sara ate 2/10. Bobby ate 1/5 of the cookies. Which child ate the most cookies?
2. Girls love to wear ribbons in their hair. Karen wants her ribbon to be longer than her sister's. Her mom bought a yard of ribbon at the store and gave 6/10 to Karen. Karen's little sister got 2/5. Did Karen get the longer piece of ribbon?
3. Joey has 8/15 of a candy bar and Michael has 2/9 of the exact same kind of candy bar. Who has more?
4. Two-sevenths of the animals at the zoo live inside the reptile house. Three-ninths live in the aquarium. Do more animals live in the reptile house or the aquarium?
5. At Sea World, the dolphin trainers feed the dolphins 6/10 of their food at 6:00 am. At 6:00 pm they feed them 2/5 of their food. Do the dolphins eat more in the morning or at night?
