Estimation
This lesson is on estimation and includes some basic information students need to know when they work word problems that require them to estimate and round. Just click on the play button to start the video lesson. Students need to already understand how to round by looking at the number's neighbor to see if it is five or higher (and whether the number will stay the same or go up). You can also click on the link below for some fun and challenging practice problems. There are also a few word problems demonstrating use of estimation at the bottom of the page with an answer key following.

Sample Word Problems:
1. Eddie scored 467 points in a board game. His brother scored 359 points. About how many more points did Eddie score?

3. Workers at a crayon company are packaging boxes of crayons for shipment. Each crayon box contains 12 crayons. Each shipping carton holds 325 boxes of crayons. Approximately how many crayons will be shipped in two cartons?
4. The bakery used 427 apples to make pies on Saturday. They used 5 apples in each pie. About how many pies did they make?
