Long Division
This lesson covers long division. I use the "box" method, which is a little different than the "traditional" method of solving long division problems. However, I have found that students are more accurate when they write out their multiplication facts and use the boxes to avoid place value mistakes. Later on in the year, many know their facts well enough to stop writing the facts out. I know it seems time consuming, but I have had great success with this method. However, the goal is for the students to get the answer correct and build confidence in their skills. Therefore, I have also added a video demonstrating the "traditional" method for solving long division problems. Both videos for long division are provided below. Click on the play button to view either video. Beneath the videos, there is a link to practice long division problems. Some word problems are given at the bottom of this page to further practice and understand application of the skill. An answer key is also posted at the very bottom of the page.
