Finding Parts of a Whole
Students will need to be able to determine fractions of a whole number or whole group of materials. It is important to understand that the fraction of the whole is also a whole number and not a fraction. For example, one half of ten students is five students. Not five tenths students. The video on how to find parts of a whole is provided below. Click on the play button to view the video. There is a link to practice problems below the video and some word problems are provided at the bottom of the page that demonstrate what the students will ultimately have to do with the skill.

4. The local pet store has 35 pets. 2/7 of them are dogs. 1/5 of them are cats. How many of the pets are neither dogs nor cats?
5. In a group of children, 2/5 of the children wear glasses. If 10 children wear glasses, how many children do not wear glasses? (Warning: This one is tricky! Really think about what it is asking.)
