Reflections, Rotations, and Translations
(Flips, Turns, and Slides)
This lesson deals with moving and manipulating two-dimensional figures. A reflection makes a figure look like it is being reflected in the mirror. The simple name for this is a "flip". A rotation occurs when a figure is rotated 90 or more degrees. The simple name for this is a "turn." A translation occurs when a figure is simply moved from one location to another. I tell the students to think of transportation (moving something from one place to another) to help them remember. The simple term for this concept is a "slide."
