Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators
If you have not viewed the lessons on simplifying regular and improper fractions, please watch those videos before viewing this one. In this lesson, students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators (where the bottom numbers for both fractions are the same). Once students have added or subtracted the fractions, they must know how to simplify their answers. If their answer is improper, they must simplify it and then change it to a mixed fraction. Videos that cover these other steps are provided on the lessons page and should be watched before continuing on. The video for adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators is provided below. A link to practice problems can be found underneath the video. Word problems demonstrating the skill are provided at the bottom of this page.

Sample Word Problems:
1. Jill spent 1/6 of her money on a new shirt. She spent 2/6 of her money on pants. What fraction of her money has she spent?
2. Jamie has 7/8 of a bag of Skittles. She gave 1/8 of what she had to Nancy. She gave 2/8 of what she had to Bradley. What fraction of Jamie's bag is left?
3. Peppermint Patty pulls the football away from Charlie Brown 9/15 of the time. What fraction of the time is Charlie Brown able to kick the football? (Remember what equals one whole for the whole amount of time)
4. During a marathon, Carlos drank 3/8 of his water at the first rest stop. He drank 3/8 of his water at the second rest stop too. What fraction of his water did Carlos drink at the two stops?
5. Harry and Sally are taking a road trip to New York. They use 3/12 of their gas on the first day and 1/12 on each day of the next three days. What fraction of their tank is empty when they get to New York?
